TGiF returns

Well I guess if you ask you shall receive? Asked for the return of it years ago.... NOW they get off their asses and bring it back? So after learning of this I'm having some thoughts on it and felt compelled to post. I won't make it a habit, don't particularly like blogging and have so many things I'd rather be doing than communicating with the endless insanity that is the net... but this means something to me personally so I got to say something...

TGIF what to say about it... it's where the party was in my childhood. Nothing mattered for me through the week but making it to friday to gear up for the comedy block back then.... I swear to you. I lived it up, made the block an event to be believed. I wish I had like foresaw the day it would be taken off air, I'd have taped more of it rather than just taken it for granted.

It was great stuff... simply that. Dinosaurs, family matters, full house, muppets tonight, actual comedians writing and coming up with good jokes and stories. It was great well written fun shows. No cheap gags, or mindless physical humor as the only thing going on, it was good, thoughtful smart jokes. Which is what I immediately fell in love with about it.

And of course Urkel. He owned TGIF. without him, hard to say any of it would have been anything. Will they acknowledge Jaleel's dominance as the real reason TGIF soared? Apparently he'll guest star in a show on the new block or something so they're trying to pimp him as a reason to watch the new one... That is what they've resorted to to try to get interest in the return of tgif? Kinda suspicious, but doubt Jaleel will turn down a nice ass check.  I mean honestly it's awkward for him to associate himself with abc and tgif again after the betrayal of abc and moving to cbs. Guess they've buried that stuff by now what do I know... No doubt he has a lot of friends working at abc who were welcome to him returning.

I was there when TGIF even kinda began... Mind you I was just as old as the Mary Kate and Ashley when it was even getting started and way before urkel exploded on it, but yeah I saw it happening and was there when it exploded in popularity and was eagerly feasting on new episodes whenever they came about.

A lot of TGIF clones popped up as a result of TGIF becoming what it was.... all the networks tried to just make their own. I think Snick was the cousin of TGIF... lots of networks did similar shit... And ultimately what the hell was girl meets world but an attempt to bring back tgif on disney channel... what else did they try to bring back from tgif? Fuller house should be broadcast as part of TGIF 2.0 if they want to get real about it...

But yeah it's interesting, we're in an age where TGIF has kinda been broken up and still knocking around on various platforms rather than being centralized in one spot like in the old days....

Now on to the real question... will it be good? Will it seem worth doing or will a Urkel-less tgif not be worth anyone's time. They tried to keep tgif going sans family matters its flagship show. It remarkably failed and they had to just end it... Which I found extremely depressing. Something that was always there to kinda remind me of better times just had a funeral and died with a spooty poof at the end.... it hurt... Now it's kinda be re-animated but here we are... TGIF was the lead in to a badass awesome line up of Saturday cartoons in the 90s. It was like a giant "F U" to the school week. Here we had good ass comedy shows then you went to bed smiling because you knew the next morning you'd be blasted in the face with even more fun stuff to watch... That's how it was. It was a mini party the weekends.... we had a blast. Now what's the point? Watch TGIF then go to bed and have sports and some shitty educational show to watch on saturday?

That's my biggest problem. It's fine that they want to try bringing back TGIF. TGIF is a great idea, it's about letting go of the hectic work week and relaxing. It's great. But it also was the ramp up leading to saturday fun.... it's like brief preview of what your saturday will be. Now saturday is NOTHING.... they're not bothering to fill the day with great cartoons and movies and fun stuff since I guess you can get all that from the internet or just watch a cartoon channel so who needs saturday toons. I can see that reasoning.... Used to be bored to tears by the thousandth airing of a rerun or a old as looney toons episode so I can see why they're not putting a bunch of shows up you can go watch elsewhere or netflix or whatever, I get it....

But that takes a lot away from TGIF of course.... Without that sense that there's another day of fun to be had, it takes something out of it. So the only way this new TGIF is going to be good is if it's actually fucking good.... And I've sat and watched a few of the shows they're putting on the line up, they suck. So I'm not too keen on what they'll be serving up.

Fresh off the Boat.... mildly interesting but what's the point of this show? It's just to me forgettable like a lot of failed tgif stuff from the olden times where they'd try to launch a show and it'd suck so they'd have to cancel it then for a while just air a double back to back of family matters or something.... trust me, I've seen a lot of shows try to get going on tgif and suck and flake out... so this reminds me of that...

Fred Mother fuckin savage is returning to give some kind of cred to the line up but apparently not as Corey. So what's the point? Nothing against the man, he's my boy. But nobody cares about him outside of corey and even as corey he was a pain to watch. Why are they hoping bringing him back will draw anybody. But as with Jaleel he's got friends in high places who will give him spots, so it's fairly obvious....

Tough to say whether TGIF will last this time. I can vaguely remember them trying to start TGIF or something like it again on abc some odd years ago...and it was being hyped as the new tgif, but it was just as is the case with this new version, bland, typical laugh track, forgettable comedies about well.. not to always pin it on that stuff, but yeah bunch of white people. It's telling isin't it? The most popular memorable show of the tgif era was a black show... a show conceived not out of the goodness of the network's heart but because the entire block of shows was pale and white as snow. It had to be broken up which was obvious... so family matters was just supposed to meet that criteria, but it dominated the block surprisingly... Now it's of course a billion years later and of course as no one could not have guessed, the network is still reluctant to give blacks a spot on tgif where a black show was the main star of the whole line up. What the giant funky bunny is this nonsense? I mean I just don't know. Not a fan of black shows made for blackness sake honestly. Blackish my wife and kids, suck.... Just because they're black shows doesn't make them good. So I'm not going to think just throw a black show in there, but at least respect what made TGIF huge in the first place, a black show. The concept of diversity actually created something better than the other comedy blocks out there.... It's a thought...

And they're trying to pin it on an asian show, say look this isn't a white show. Asians are whiter than white people, shut up...

I'd be down for that, just make another black show and see where it goes today in the modern age, family matters represents 90s life with its ancient rotary phones, and antenna tvs, and vhs tapes and all that stupid shit.

I don't know what it'd be about but yeah, lets look at the black side of life TODAY and get their side of the story told? Worth it? Maybe even a gay show. That would be something.... They threw black people a bone in the 90s since they had no choice. It's time to give gays a damn shot. Women, women too... TGIF was male dominated now that I look back on no female shows. I'm a fan of females, would be interesting...

I'll end it there. Do I think the new TGIF will be great? It has potential but this is disney and when TGIF began it was run by ABC not disney... so it had a lot more balls back then to try new shit.... indeed the cowboys who ran tv networks are a dying breed and now we have a bunch of sissy boys in suits and ties running the ship, it's bad these days. No I have no hope for it, but it should be interesting.... give that tony guy who plays Chump a shot at a show on there, might actually be a good bit of stuff from him... but yeah tgif will and always has been the urkel block guest starring a bunch of white people, so it's not looking possible to recapture that....

Rough Cut up

Here's the rough ass cut of this damn thing...

And a link to download it if that embed is screwed over...

Gonna fix what is wrong with it and such but wanted to have my progress viewable instead of me just talking about it... yeah I already fixed a few slippery sync bits so that stuff will work out. Debating whether to care enough to fix the non-dialogue stuff that's off sync. Ultimately it's not that bothersome to me so why go through the trouble...

Still much to fix and shit, it's just asinine that this movie is not on blu ray, so much effort put into the cinematography. The little dvdrip can't do it justice... so sad...

well back to work, take a look you might just have a bit of fun.

Edit:
Smaller more cleaner 2 pass prettymuch final version right here:

sync complete

It's over, gonna throw a party now... but yeah the tough grind of pain stakingly syncing every scene is over. It's all matched up as best as possible. Like I said slight bullshit changes to the dvds have caused the tracks to not be the same exact audio track so it's not a swap job. It's a meticulous bit by bit process...

I could get the rest of it done right the hell now and throw down a rough cut to take a look at it and find mistakes... but I'm so over looking at this movie and exploring its universe. Love it, but it's definitely a movie to watch once in a blue not engross yourself in it or its awkward ass story... I'm discovering bits of it that kinda make it more profound as I watch it. Like who the hell is Ming anyway and what was he really doing in the boy's life. It's definitely a riff on wizard of oz more than alice in wonderland. Essentially the boy never does leave to tao but the journey he goes on is about teaching him life lessons and none of the movie really happens, it's all in his head... so yeah, weird. Don't know what the sequel potential might have been considering the story is resolved in one film... must have missed the significance of the medallions at some point, it just is suddenly a thing at the end of the film. Maybe there's a scene or something... flawed but powerful well made film... just a sad end to it, alot  of hard work for zip nothing. Didn't really take off as a concept though it's much better than a lot of misfires of the 90s era...And future films trying to do the same thing. If you want me to elaborate, the movie that's TRYING to be this movie is that piece of clunky garbage the forbidden kingdom... like I said, lots of movies do this same concept and just suck... this one isn't one of them.

I have indeed watched the entire movie frame one to last and the rip I downloaded is again kinda a messy thing. Ideally I'll be able to purchase the damn dvd myself rip it properly and losslessly then now that I have accurate audio to match it, just remaster it in english. I will get to that in time. For now stay with me and you'll get a nice gift some time tomorrow...

half way there

took me this long and it's that much of an insane task, jesus... and the issue I have is that the youtube stream of the movie I'm getting the audio from to make it english is lower quality than the french rip. No doubt it's an older encode from way back or something or youtube just downgrades the audio on stuff for easier streaming... wouldn't mind going and getting a proper dvd rip with excellent audio to swap it out with, but all my searching has come up with nuthin... my plan is to do the edit best I can then once I aquire a better audio just swap it with the youtube version and it should fit in prettymuch perfectly...

Max files size I hope comes up around 800mb. That's larger than the rip itself which means I shouldn't lose any of the quality it already has.

It's a slow process which is why it's killing me so I decided to take time off from it. It's gonna drive me mad to focus on it for too long... Looking forward to finishing, good grief.

I've had no choice but to repair scenes in the french dvd rip that were corrupted by the anti-rip code on dvds. They're supposed to make them unrippable. Well in this case the person ripped it fine but whatever code was in the dvd to prevent it was trying to screw up the picture so bits here and there are distorted. The ripper didn't bother to try again and get a better one, just let be as is. Thanks bro... So whenver the image screws up I used the youtube footage to fill it in and its gonna be awkward but I can't stand when the picture just flat out jerks around and screws up as it tends to do from time to time...

Overall I will say this. Years ago I planned to cobble together a version of this movie using merely the two youtube vids of warriors that are available. Yep even if it was all crappy quality at least it'd be in 16:9. So to finally get my hands on the big higher quality version Iv'e been looking for has motivated me to do this. I've watched half that I did and was enjoying it. There's something funny about certain bits but overall, no jarring out of sync issues to be noted and corrected. I hope the rest of the film is going to go this way and we can experience the movie as intended. See ya on the other side of this journey.... damn good movie, love how tongue in cheek it is... so 90s

working on things

want to do it faster...

yep. What am I up to today.... got some new tasks...

should take me two or three days if I work hard at it... got things going on now, kinda exciting...

Going to be doing some intensive surgery on Warriors of Virtue a movie I kinda saw on tv as a kid and thought it was sweet, later wanted to see it in its original widescreen format and never could find it. Apparently nobody's really just done much to get a widescreen version out on blu ray or even dvd. The film is a massive underrated overlooked gem of the 90s cinema age. It bombed, so for whatever reason they've treated it terribly and never bothered working on a proper release.... Is it a corny ass film? Yes, but I grew up in the 90s it was a smaltzy corny ass time. The film's not representing something untrue.

Sadly I can't just plop the english audio track onto the widescreen french version of the film I got. Different frame rates and slightly different editing forces the audio to go out of sync too much...

So I got to go through the whole film minutes and seconds at a time to sync the audio properly and make it decent. It will never be perfect. All I want is to be able to goddamn provide an alternative for those who like me are sick of watching the cropped version. The film was soooooooooo intended to be viewed in wide screen it's ridiculous how much it suffers from being cut in half...

As for wtf version of the film in widescreen I could get. Not a great one. I searched for hours for the french dvd rip only to discover it on a streaming website for french films or whatever... so it's literally just some decent quality web stream download I got... but it's not bad... not great but not offensively bad...Nice to finally get a good look at the film... but wow, can't make sense of it but the film was released in france under a different title, guess they didn't want to mention virtue or some shit.... but it's called Magic Warriors and they edited the damn title to be different so you won't get the original kangaroo titles, gone. And lord knows what else was cut or changed. So far there are little things I've noticed. Either Im wrong about it or the pan and scan version uses longer shots of scenes and actually totally different takes of scenes. One shot was on point and audio synced but it was two different takes for that one shot at the football game. It became clear the two dvds were edited slightly differently... Hope nothing major is changed as I drudge along here...

Watched my edit of street fighter the movie... another 90s insanity film... I have nostalgia for it, but I can't overlook how wrong they did the movie and how cheesy it is.... Ming Na is excellent, a lot of the other cast members are putting a lot of heart into their roles and ultimately they save what could have been an epic disaster. It's a big clunky insane mess the street fighter movie... I do want to update my fx for it and maybe do new things here and there with it so I do plan to do another go around with that movie and make a new fan edit of it..

Gonna really get going on chun li as well. Another big fail for street fighter. I've been planning ways to fix that film for years now. The deleted scenes actually can be reworked into it, but yeah gonna have to figure out where to begin working on that. But it should be made much easier since I'll have Kreuk to look at during the process...

That's it I think. Do I want to do new cuts of like, other stuff I did. Yeah. I've grown as an editor and fx artist so I'd do things better of course but nah not that interested in it...I like this stuff though. recently watched the remastered star trek and it does help to update the fx at times, was really grooving to an ep that reallly deserved an overhaul... not too keen on watching the more cheap ass episodes they made... I can only guess that those episodes that were made on the cheap were the ones responsible for the show getting canned. The eps where it's actually about star trekking, good god what a show.

Static will be taken care of it, I think once I get the money to buy a new drive. I'll be doing multiple test renders and can't hope to do that without more drive space to do it with....

as for right now. It's like yeah I want to get warriors done and we'll see where I go after that. I'll be posting it here and wherever I can once I finish and you can grab a widescreen english dub of this damn classic.

New chapter

Got a lot to say then again, not really. A lot of difference between today's world I ended up in and the world I knew all too well of the 90s. I don't count early 2000s. That time period was far dumber and more overly complicated and ridiculous than it needed to be. If I only had the wisdom about the world I have now it'd have been probably a much smoother time period. I can't go back and fix that so I'm not going to even think about it...

I don't know... want to get into producing my own tech and movie/tv and videogame reviews type of channel. I think people who are interested in me will like what I have to say. I don't like the current world of corporate sponsored reviews and shit being shilled online on the daily that we've damn ended up becoming. I loved the underground fanboy in his garage producing stuff kinda thing that existed long ago... much more real than the fake plastic corporate controlled nonsense. I mean just read youtube comments from the obvious corporate advertising department interns or whatever. OMG this game is going to rule, getting it first day! It's just retarded...

It is what it inevitably would be, the net. I should not be surprised.

As is fairly obvious, I did indeed get my comp up and running now and have moved it into a more private area. I know now that dust is a huge issue with PC's and you have to clean the dust out of them, this is critical....

Gonna get back to work on static... It's good and I want to finish it and get it out there and show people what could be possible if they supported static and pushed him towards a theatrical film for f's sake.

Watched Black Dynamite for the second time a few days ago too. Wanted to review it. See that's what I'm talking about, watching movies and reviewing them is what I'd like to kinda get into...

Saw the movie years and years ago, it's been what I do of course. I'm a Michael Jai White madman. I mean I don't even remember where I first saw him, was it spawn or universal soldier... Don't know. But I got spawn one day in path mark over in mt vernon and that made me his fan but I think I was well aware of him from Universal Soldier too... Dude's insanely gifted, deserves all his success...

But yeah was interested in watching black dynamite for no particular reason, just watched it... actually quite damn good a movie on its own, always discovering new stuff upon re-watching it... It's light though. Nothing in it has depth... it's a 100% parody. Would be better if it was more like shaft and took it self more seriously. The fun part of movies like this is the fact that they are taking their ridiculousness seriously... Dynamite doesn't tread into that territory which is fine. I guess that's what Jai wanted. I don't know... he talks about when they made it some times and it's kinda hinted that they improv-ed a lot of it. So that lends to the uneven feel of the film. Wacky one minute, super kinda serious and realistic the next.

Watched the whole damn cartoon they made too. The cartoon is better than the movie. The characters are explored more, you kinda get to know them instead of them being so shallow. It's what the sequel would have been had they ever gotten around to it. Do I want Dynamite 2? Do I want undercover brother 2? Of course I want more of these damn movies. Too bad it's tough stuff trying to get them made. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered undercover brother back in the good ol days. Watched that movie on repeat it was so fun and just a joy to watch, and jeez, what a franchise that could have been... what the hell happened?

Dunno gonna review shenmue series at some point really want to do that because I was there playing it on my DC on first USA release of the game and what were my thoughts of it then, heh.. it's well. I'll get to that...

As for right now, what am I going to f'n be doing....preparing myself for the tough tough tough months perhaps of fx work and editing... Now I'm over thinking it, it's just fx work, I don't think I need to edit the movie, but the hardest most damning issue is making sure all my files are still able to be found by vegas and after fx...

Yep I've been down this road before and it will suck to pain stakingly make the program find each little file as I prepare to organize them for fx stuff.... it's gonna suuuuuck....

I'll leave it at that. A lot has changed about things now.... I mean seeing wil weaton quit twitter, what do I think about that? Honestly good for him. If he felt it was damaging him to stay plugged to the net and wanted to leave, I'm totally on that side... I think I would be a totally different person today if I didn't get sucked into the web, although maybe wouldn't have gotten as much knowledge and stuff about movies and video editing tools and of course found old classic tv and cartoons through irc chat so it's a double edged sword. Thing I think is that, you just really would be better using the internet in a utilitarian way and not interactive. Lots of assholes in this box. So you gonna have to deal with that if you get into it too deep... So don't! And I'm not gonna get deep with the net ever again. I learned my damn lesson... that's all, gonna be back to report on static's progress and update from time to time on where I'm at.
