Well I guess if you ask you shall receive? Asked for the return of it years ago.... NOW they get off their asses and bring it back? So after learning of this I'm having some thoughts on it and felt compelled to post. I won't make it a habit, don't particularly like blogging and have so many things I'd rather be doing than communicating with the endless insanity that is the net... but this means something to me personally so I got to say something...
TGIF what to say about it... it's where the party was in my childhood. Nothing mattered for me through the week but making it to friday to gear up for the comedy block back then.... I swear to you. I lived it up, made the block an event to be believed. I wish I had like foresaw the day it would be taken off air, I'd have taped more of it rather than just taken it for granted.
It was great stuff... simply that. Dinosaurs, family matters, full house, muppets tonight, actual comedians writing and coming up with good jokes and stories. It was great well written fun shows. No cheap gags, or mindless physical humor as the only thing going on, it was good, thoughtful smart jokes. Which is what I immediately fell in love with about it.
And of course Urkel. He owned TGIF. without him, hard to say any of it would have been anything. Will they acknowledge Jaleel's dominance as the real reason TGIF soared? Apparently he'll guest star in a show on the new block or something so they're trying to pimp him as a reason to watch the new one... That is what they've resorted to to try to get interest in the return of tgif? Kinda suspicious, but doubt Jaleel will turn down a nice ass check. I mean honestly it's awkward for him to associate himself with abc and tgif again after the betrayal of abc and moving to cbs. Guess they've buried that stuff by now what do I know... No doubt he has a lot of friends working at abc who were welcome to him returning.
I was there when TGIF even kinda began... Mind you I was just as old as the Mary Kate and Ashley when it was even getting started and way before urkel exploded on it, but yeah I saw it happening and was there when it exploded in popularity and was eagerly feasting on new episodes whenever they came about.
A lot of TGIF clones popped up as a result of TGIF becoming what it was.... all the networks tried to just make their own. I think Snick was the cousin of TGIF... lots of networks did similar shit... And ultimately what the hell was girl meets world but an attempt to bring back tgif on disney channel... what else did they try to bring back from tgif? Fuller house should be broadcast as part of TGIF 2.0 if they want to get real about it...
But yeah it's interesting, we're in an age where TGIF has kinda been broken up and still knocking around on various platforms rather than being centralized in one spot like in the old days....
Now on to the real question... will it be good? Will it seem worth doing or will a Urkel-less tgif not be worth anyone's time. They tried to keep tgif going sans family matters its flagship show. It remarkably failed and they had to just end it... Which I found extremely depressing. Something that was always there to kinda remind me of better times just had a funeral and died with a spooty poof at the end.... it hurt... Now it's kinda be re-animated but here we are... TGIF was the lead in to a badass awesome line up of Saturday cartoons in the 90s. It was like a giant "F U" to the school week. Here we had good ass comedy shows then you went to bed smiling because you knew the next morning you'd be blasted in the face with even more fun stuff to watch... That's how it was. It was a mini party the weekends.... we had a blast. Now what's the point? Watch TGIF then go to bed and have sports and some shitty educational show to watch on saturday?
That's my biggest problem. It's fine that they want to try bringing back TGIF. TGIF is a great idea, it's about letting go of the hectic work week and relaxing. It's great. But it also was the ramp up leading to saturday fun.... it's like brief preview of what your saturday will be. Now saturday is NOTHING.... they're not bothering to fill the day with great cartoons and movies and fun stuff since I guess you can get all that from the internet or just watch a cartoon channel so who needs saturday toons. I can see that reasoning.... Used to be bored to tears by the thousandth airing of a rerun or a old as looney toons episode so I can see why they're not putting a bunch of shows up you can go watch elsewhere or netflix or whatever, I get it....
But that takes a lot away from TGIF of course.... Without that sense that there's another day of fun to be had, it takes something out of it. So the only way this new TGIF is going to be good is if it's actually fucking good.... And I've sat and watched a few of the shows they're putting on the line up, they suck. So I'm not too keen on what they'll be serving up.
Fresh off the Boat.... mildly interesting but what's the point of this show? It's just to me forgettable like a lot of failed tgif stuff from the olden times where they'd try to launch a show and it'd suck so they'd have to cancel it then for a while just air a double back to back of family matters or something.... trust me, I've seen a lot of shows try to get going on tgif and suck and flake out... so this reminds me of that...
Fred Mother fuckin savage is returning to give some kind of cred to the line up but apparently not as Corey. So what's the point? Nothing against the man, he's my boy. But nobody cares about him outside of corey and even as corey he was a pain to watch. Why are they hoping bringing him back will draw anybody. But as with Jaleel he's got friends in high places who will give him spots, so it's fairly obvious....
Tough to say whether TGIF will last this time. I can vaguely remember them trying to start TGIF or something like it again on abc some odd years ago...and it was being hyped as the new tgif, but it was just as is the case with this new version, bland, typical laugh track, forgettable comedies about well.. not to always pin it on that stuff, but yeah bunch of white people. It's telling isin't it? The most popular memorable show of the tgif era was a black show... a show conceived not out of the goodness of the network's heart but because the entire block of shows was pale and white as snow. It had to be broken up which was obvious... so family matters was just supposed to meet that criteria, but it dominated the block surprisingly... Now it's of course a billion years later and of course as no one could not have guessed, the network is still reluctant to give blacks a spot on tgif where a black show was the main star of the whole line up. What the giant funky bunny is this nonsense? I mean I just don't know. Not a fan of black shows made for blackness sake honestly. Blackish my wife and kids, suck.... Just because they're black shows doesn't make them good. So I'm not going to think just throw a black show in there, but at least respect what made TGIF huge in the first place, a black show. The concept of diversity actually created something better than the other comedy blocks out there.... It's a thought...
And they're trying to pin it on an asian show, say look this isn't a white show. Asians are whiter than white people, shut up...
I'd be down for that, just make another black show and see where it goes today in the modern age, family matters represents 90s life with its ancient rotary phones, and antenna tvs, and vhs tapes and all that stupid shit.
I don't know what it'd be about but yeah, lets look at the black side of life TODAY and get their side of the story told? Worth it? Maybe even a gay show. That would be something.... They threw black people a bone in the 90s since they had no choice. It's time to give gays a damn shot. Women, women too... TGIF was male dominated now that I look back on no female shows. I'm a fan of females, would be interesting...
I'll end it there. Do I think the new TGIF will be great? It has potential but this is disney and when TGIF began it was run by ABC not disney... so it had a lot more balls back then to try new shit.... indeed the cowboys who ran tv networks are a dying breed and now we have a bunch of sissy boys in suits and ties running the ship, it's bad these days. No I have no hope for it, but it should be interesting.... give that tony guy who plays Chump a shot at a show on there, might actually be a good bit of stuff from him... but yeah tgif will and always has been the urkel block guest starring a bunch of white people, so it's not looking possible to recapture that....
