I had a feeling Colin would be axed, I mean it's just like giving the movie to brett ratner based on his success at the box office. Ratner's not a bad director, but he's not GREAT. And that's what episdoe 9 needs. Hell even Episode 8 doesn't need to be great. But No, you can't have dingo Joe Nobody director helming Episode 9, just get out of here with that bullshit.
So now heads are spinning around, people wondering who's going to tackle the last movie. Some say, just call back JJ. eh...
I kinda am ok with that, but he's proven to not have an ounce of his own damn creative juice at all and sadly that's not what I want personally for 9. It needs a Vision.
Me personally wouldn't mind Spielberg doing it. Spielberg's been wanting to do a star wars movie for decades. Lord knows what he has in mind or would have done if Lucas wasn't an asshole and let him actually direct Revenge instead of just letting him direct some of the fight scenes over super mario lava.
Problem is Spielberg's trying to evolve as a director these days, tackle tougher subject matter, bigger more complex things. Making a star wars movie would be a breeze for him. He could do it in his sleep. He'll never take it since it wouldn't be a challenge.
I dare say call Bryan Singer. He's an actual great director working today. Will he want it? Probably not and of course, he's been burned by taking on iconic properties after Superman Returns didn't get the ball rolling on superman despite being a damn near masterpiece.
But if Lucasfilm has any balls they'll consider meeting with Singer about it. He's literally been making star wars movies with all his films imo. I get the same visceral star wars sense from his films so he'd fit right in.
Other than Singer...
People chanting LUCAS LUCAS LUCAS. It would be a dream if Lucas would do the last movie to be honest... NOT WRITE!!! but DIRECT!! the last movie. It'd be the perfect ending to things and quasi legitimize this new trilogy. Problem is that Lucas is not a fan of force awakens. He blatantly dismisses the film and doesn't seem to want anything to do with the new movies, and he had to watch as Disney tore up his own outline for the new trilogy, so you can bet he's going to say no. Just would be awesome if he did, but of course no, work on a movie after selling the rights to the franchise, kinda makes no sense. He'll not want to go open that box of womprats.
I'd be down for James Cameron, though again, he's making his own star wars right now. so yeah why would he jump ship to do real star wars when he can make smurf star wars...
I'd like Ridly Scott to do it since in interviews he goes on about how he loved and was inspired so much by Star Wars. Hell of a thing if he stopped screwing around in Alien and made a freakin badass Star Wars film with his style... shit would be goddamn.
Other choices, hard to think of anyone worthy, but they have to be truly visionary directors who are trying to take film to new levels and do different interesting things, that's the basic qualifications.
Goddamn, I mean in a perfect world, yeah maybe Guerllmo Del Torro would do it... then we saw what happened when he was supposed to do the hobbit movies, shit got boned up real fast. No doubt he'd wanting to stay the fuck out of big franchise films for a while, and that's a shame, man's a genius.
Peter Jackson? I guess, if you want a 5 hour movie that spends 2 hours of fight scenes, but not a bad choice and he's got mountains of experience... hmmm
Most likely though:
Rian Johnson
Ron Howard
